10 reasons to Practice Pranayama

10 reasons to Practice Pranayama

Do you ever catch yourself holding your breath?  How does it make you feel?  How does that make you look?

Sometimes I find myself holding my breath when I am pressed for time or dealing with a challenging task or situation. Breathing shallow leaves me with a stressed feeling and a serious expression on my face, not always sending the right message to the people around. Two things always help me improve this common problem; a good cardio work out (like running with my dog or a kick boxing class) and Pranayama practice (breathing exercises). The result is always the same -I’m more focused and actually get more done, with a smile on my face 🙂

Here are 10 other reasons to love Pranayama practice:

  1. LOOK YOUNGER.  Better breathing = more oxygen to your cells = better nourished skin.
  2. CALM YOUR STUNNINGLY BUSY MIND.  Focusing on your breath, and your breath only.
  3. FIND THOSE CAR KEYS.  More oxygen to your brain gives you better memory.
  4. REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF PAIN. People with chronic pain conditions such as migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, arthritis and other conditions report that pranayama helps to control pain and the reaction to pain.
  5. SLEEP MORE SOUNDLY.  A constantly running mind interrupts sleep and reduces sleep quality.
  6. DRINK LESS COFFEE.  Better breathing will give you more energy so all of those artificial stimulants aren’t needed.
  7. WORK BETTER. Whatever your work is, you’ll do a better job because you’ll concentrate better and be less likely to get distracted.
  8. GET OVER COLDS FASTER.  Get fewer colds as well!  Less stress boosts your immunity system.
  9. HAVE BETTER RELATIONSHIPS. If you are calmer, less stressed and less anxious, you can better connect to your kids, your parents, co-workers and your friends.
  10. STOP YELLING. Reduce anxiety; gain more patience and compassion as your mind learns to stop reacting and start to quiet down.

There is a Pranayama Workshop at Awakened Yoga Studio in Sugarland this weekend that will teach breath control, how to increase lung capacity and calm busy minds.

If you live in Corpus Christi try out Gretchen’s Pranayama practice at Crossroads Yoga on Saturdays at 8.00 am.
