Do you suffer from Dark Circles and Puffy Eyes?

Do you suffer from Dark Circles and Puffy Eyes?

One of the most common skin concerns we hear from our clients has to do with the delicate area around the eyes. Both men and women, young and old experience this all-to common skin condition at times.

Dark circles and puffiness under eyes is a skin condition that can be temporary, thank goodness. Sometimes it seems more permanent though, and it is worsened by time. The eye area is also one of the first places to develop signs of aging in the form of wrinkles.

What to do? The saying “prevention is better than cure” is very true when it comes to skincare and our overall health. Once the connection of inner health/ outer beauty is identified, small adjustments to your skincare and lifestyle approach can improve this common skin condition, sometimes also called racoon eyes.

Lifestyle plays a big role, and there are many more causes of dark circles and puffiness than just lack of sleep. Contrary to what you may think, excess caffeine can actually make it worse. Dark circles and puffiness can also be caused by kidney strain, anxiety, or heavy stress.

From a holistic view; once you can recognize that the root cause of your skin conditions originated inside the body (puffy eyes, hormonal breakouts, acne, rosacea, and hyper-pigmentation), you can then begin to address the source of the problem for healing, not just subduing the symptoms.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) each part of the face represents a connection with the internal organs. During each skin consultation and before every facial we do a Face Mapping, analyzing the areas of concern and identifying the source of the skin condition.

The upper eyelids are related to the adrenals -Zone 2:
Eczema in this area is caused by adrenal stress. It can occur from excess caffeine and other stimulants, anxiety or heavy stress. It results in peeling and irritation of the skin.

The area under the eyes have a connection to the kidneys-Zone 3:
Kidney Damage in form of dark circles, redness or puffiness can occur from the use of NSAIDS like aspirin or ibuprofen, etc. It can also occur from caffeine, other medications, and lack of sleep.

Go Internal

To gain long-term results and notice change with your dark circles and puffy eyes it is important to target the internal source with internal products as well. Osmosis Inner Harmony will help to harmonize toxins in the organs, such as the kidneys, as well as brings balance to your overall internal functionality.

Drink Water

Drinking plenty of alkaline water will flush and maintain the pH of our bodies neutral; between a healthy range of 6.8 to 7.8 (ideally 7.4). This neutral pH, not acidic-not too alkaline, prevents our immune system from malfunctioning or getting weaker and helps to develop and keep it strong and healthy. It also contributes to a more youthful look, the dark circles to fade and the puff to deflate.

Avoid these Foods

You are what you eat. Control intake of these inflammatory enhancing foods as much as possible:

  • Sugar– one of the most inflammatory foods you can eat, it takes a toll on the adrenal glands causing glycation, dark circles under eyes and swelling in the body.
  • Salt – causes water retention to counteract high sodium levels and therefore make the whole body puffy and swollen.
  • Wheat and Dairy– inflammatory foods that can cause swelling and make you bloated and puffy if you are allergic, gluten or lactose intolerant.
  • Nightshade fruits– tomatoes, hot-peppers and egg-plants can cause puffiness and inflammation.

Get Beauty Sleep

Getting eight hours a night gives adequate sleep and helps preserve a youthful appearance. During sleep the body has time to heal and replenish itself and gives the skin a chance to recuperate, without having to worry about the daily protective functions and activity it faces.

One thing is for sure – it is hard to hide those pesky “bags”. Once the internal causes have been addressed, consider the following tips and tricks on how to get rid of bags under eyes or minimize dark circles:

Use Different Moisturizers for Face & Eyes

The eye area consists of thinner skin than the rest of your face and is therefore more delicate than other areas. It is best using products specially formulated for the eye area that will work effectively and restore a healthy barrier to the skin around the eyes. Look for powerhouse ingredients like peptides, as well as extracts such as buckwheat and vitamin C.

Vitamin A

Choose a good quality Vitamin A serum for your skin type. It will help firm and tighten loose or “puffy” skin lines, improve dark circles and is gentle enough to use on the delicate skin around your eye while you sleep. It also increases nutrients, collagen production, and elasticity for overall healthier skin.

Apply Sunscreen

Wear a moisturizer with at least an SPF 30 daily. A bit of sunshine doesn’t harm, 10-15 minutes a day actually infuses your body with vitamin D. However, prolonged exposure to sunlight exposes our skin to harmful UV rays that hasten wrinkle formation.

Wear Sunglasses

Sunglasses prevents from squinting in bright light and help prevent crow’s feet and wrinkles. It’s best to use glasses that have a special coating that filters ultraviolet light, which will be indicated on the lens label.

Do Exercise

Daily movements that increase cardiovascular activity will improve blood circulation and regenerate the skin. It will also stimulate the lymphatic system, our internal “garbage disposal” that removes excessive fluids and toxins and therefore “de-puffs” the eye area.

Give Self-Massage

Stimulate the blood circulation topically with a daily face massage that will help relax the muscles and diminish lines, while improving blood flow. If you are too tired to do it yourself, try the uniquely designed and ophthalmologist approved IRIS eye massager which utilizes alternating T-Sonic™ technology to reduce the visible signs of crow’s feet, dark circles, and bags under your eyes. IRIS will also dramatically improve the absorption and efficacy of your favorite eye cream or serum.

Face-Rollers and Gua Sha

These age-old skincare tools made of jade or rose quartz help products penetrate deeper into the epidermis and brightens tone by increasing lymphatic drainage (like a fingertip massage) as it reduces the blood vessels and appearance of pores. The face roller gets rid of puffiness and acts on the lymphatic system as a real life “pump”. If you struggle with large pores, acne or puffy eyes, you can ice the Gua Sha and slide it over skin reduce to swelling and inflammation.
