The 5 step wrinkle eraser

There are many known causes to wrinkles; stress and tension is definitely one of the biggest contributors.

My mother-in-law told me many years ago about how she actually got rid of her frown lines by just being aware of how it felt when the muscles in the forehead are contracted and relaxed. My mother in law is a psychiatrist and knows through science how powerful our mind is and how it is possible to erase wrinkles with mindfulness. It is easier said then done…

My favorite way to relax and de stress is through yoga practice. Yoga helps me feel and look younger. It improves my energy, quality of sleep, and complexion, softens facial lines, boost immune system, reduce allergies, increase strength, reduce stress and makes it easier to relax & laugh more. Not to mention yoga tones my body; it increases flexibility & mobility, improves circulation, releases muscle tension, relieves body aches and helps prevent injuries.

One of my favorite yoga teachers Sharon Mariani instructs us how to relax our facial muscles in a very descriptive way during shavasana. Shavasana is perhaps the most important part of yoga practice and it is the final relaxation pose of the yoga practice.

This is how:

Lying on the back, the arms and legs are spread at about 45 degrees, the eyes are closed and the breath deep. The whole body is relaxed onto the floor with an awareness of the chest and abdomen rising and falling with each breath. All parts of the body are scanned for muscular tension of any kind, which is consciously released as it is found.

  1. Relaxing the front of your face bring attention to the center of your head.
  2. Relax the jaw and rest your tongue on the top of your mouth.
  3. Bring attention away from the front of your face to the center of your head.
  4. You might feel pressure behind your eyes.
  5. Take deep slow breaths and recognize how it feels when your forehead and face are relaxed.

Eventually control of the breath, the mind, and the body becomes involuntary for the duration of the posture.

Remember this feeling!  When ever you feel stressed throughout the day, just simply do this 5 step practice for a few deep breaths and feel how your face relaxes and releases tension. Add a smile and watch the wrinkles shy away:-)
