Spa at Home – How to do it yourself

Spa at Home – How to do it yourself

We’ve barely had a chance to recover from the chaos of this past week, but trust: There’s no better way to frighten away the scaries than a little at-home facial.

Especially when it feels almost as good as the real thing, thanks to a few choice tips we’ve picked up from the pros. So queue up your “chillax” playlist (or Netflix), light a fancy candle and prepare for some much-deserved R&R. Our go-to tricks will get you there—and your face will thank you.

Think Like a Facialist

EMINENCE SPA HEADBAND
Eminence Spa Headband $20

MANGOSTEEN DAILY RESURFACING CLEANSER
Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser $42

Select your products and put them into practice like a skin pro. Ask your esthetician questions about the products she’s using, why she’s using them, and what she recommends at home for your skin type.

This also means taking a multistep approach, rather than just slapping on a mask and calling it a day. It’s your facialist’s job to customize and kick the treatment up a notch according to your complexion and issues. Schedule your free skin consultation here! And consider this your general roadmap:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Exfoliate
  3. Steam
  4. Extract
  5. Mask/Treatment
  6. Massage
  7. Moisturize

Got it? Good.

Enlist in Some Power Tools

Environ Cosmetic Roll-CIT
Environ Cosmetic Roll-CIT $100

FOREO LUNA 2 Professional
FOREO LUNA 2 Professional $199

Nu Face Trinity PRO Nu Face Trinity PRO $325

It’s an easy (and fun) way to add a professional touch to your spa sesh—and you don’t have to shell out big bucks to do it. Try a derma-roller to iron out acne scars and fine lines, or use a FOREO to clean the gunk out of your pores during cleansing. Feeling extravagant? Spring for the NuFace Trinity ($325), which tones and contours wrinkles, bags, and sagging skin.

Blow Off Some Steam

In addition to drawing dirt, oil, and grime out of pores, facial steam just feels so relaxing. It’s easy to DIY, too: Heat some water over the stove, and add a mix of dried flowers or tea—plain lemon slices are fine, too. After letting it simmer and steep for a few minutes, pour the mixture into a large bowl, and drape a towel over your head and the bowl so the steam has no other place to escape. Stay put for about five minutes.

Refine Your Application Technique

Kerstin Florian Organic Clarifying Lavender Facial Oil
Kerstin Florian Organic Clarifying Lavender Facial Oil $66

Facial massage is just as much a part of proper treatment as the products themselves—it boosts circulation and lymph flow, and ensures that the formulas penetrate deeply. Gently massage your face oil into your skin in a circular motion, and switch to light tapping with your fingers on the delicate skin surrounding your eyes. If you prefer using a tool other than your fingers for a facial massage, try a roller—the cool stone does wonders for decreasing puffiness. Or sculpt your face with a Gua Sha stone.

ANDA Gua Sha Set
ANDA Gua Sha Set $48

Gua sha is an ancient Chinese practice whose facial benefits include lifted, contoured facial muscles; smoother skin; and a reduction of wrinkles. Simply drench your face in your favorite serum, then use the smooth edges of this rose quartz tool to scrape the skin, lifting it from the center of your face upward toward your hairline.

Try a Peel

Osmosis Polish Firming Mask
Osmosis Polish Firming Mask $50

Facial peels take that exfoliating step a notch further, chemically resurfacing dead skin to reveal a brighter, younger complexion underneath. It’s the ultimate fast track to a radiant glow.

Double-Team Your Masks

Osmosis Polish Firming Mask
Kerstin Florian Rejuvenating Spirulina Masque $68

Start with a detoxifying mud or clay mask, which acts like a magnet to dirt and excess oil as it dries.
Even if you’re too time-strapped to do anything else on our list, try this for a near-instant face refresh—it feels SO good.

Customize Your Treatments

IsClinical Active Serum
IsClinical Active Serum $135

Dullness got you down? Looking to obliterate those blackheads? Target any specific issues with correlating products. (We love Is Clinical’s lineup of all-natural serum concentrates, which are formulated to help whatever ailment or annoyance you’ve got.)

Moisturize

Kerstin Florian Rejuvenating Moisture Balm
Kerstin Florian Rejuvenating Moisture Balm $52

Rehydrate and soothe any redness or sensitivity with a balm or salve.

Rehydrate

Vita Jewel Glass Water Bottle
Vita Jewel Glass Water Bottle $98

You might be inclined to ignore this step, but don’t: Any skin-pampering session requires replenishment since you’re detoxifying and moving lymph around. Besides, do you ever really need an occasion to knock back some H2O?

Cupid’s Kiss (Rose Quartz)
All you need is … water. The use of gems to vitalize water is a traditional art which was already known to the ancient Greek. Recently, this old tradition has been rediscovered. Gemstones have the ability to store energy. That effect makes quartz watches work, for example. Each type of gem, by nature, has its unique kind of energetic information. The gems inside the VitaJuwel vials transfer their information to the water that surrounds the vial and, thus, improve the waters’ vitalization level. An effect which regular water drinkers might even be able to taste! And when you add rose quartz, the quintessential stone of love, anything is possible! Rose quartz is used by experts to release emotional wounds and traumas, to balance emotions and bring peace and calm. This balance is said to relief stress and ease anxiety.
