Summer heat and the skin

Many of my clients are noticing changes to their skin this season and are asking how to keep a fresh face this summer. Summer heat aggravates the skin and often brings out skin conditions like rashes, dehydration and acne.

Here are some tips that will help keep you cool and your skin glowing:

  • Choose cooling foods. Foods that help keep that heat in check will give more of a benefit to your skin in the summer.  Some cooling foods are watermelon, cucumber, fennel, peppermint, cilantro, turmeric and red grapes according to the Ayurvedic principle.  Avoid sugar that causes inflammation.
  • Hydrate. Sip on water, herbal teas, and coconut water throughout the day. Try adding antioxidant rich fruit like cucumber, watermelon and mint for a refreshing drink.  Sipping water hydrates the inside and boosts circulation and replaces fluids for additional cooling effects.
  • Yoga breath:  If you feel overheated cool your body down by creating a straw with your tongue and suck in oxygen through that “straw”. A few deep breathes just like that works instantly!
  • Swim.  Summers best exercise without any sweating! Swimming will also keep the lymphatic system working maximum capacity and help to detox our bodies giving a healthy glow and remove puffiness.
  • Sun.  If possible avoid sun at peak time between 11-1. Poor diet and significant alcohol consumption will reduce your tolerance to the sun even more as they reduce your immune strength and thus UV damage repair-ability.
  • Rest.  Get enough rest and sleep or the adrenal glands works to hard, aggravating heat within our bodies that can cause rashes and skin breakouts.
